“UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves: the Importance of the Biosphere Reserve of Santana”, was the theme of the 1st National School Competition on Biosphere Reserves. It was organized by the UNESCOS’s National Committee, the City Council of Santana and the municipal company Terra Cidade.

1st National School Conpetition on Biosphere Reserves

The main goal of the competition is to create awareness, through the youngsters and all intervening in the pedagogical process, to matters intrinsic to the Biosphere Reserve thematic, in particular to the importance of the Reserve of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The event also intended to become a link between the commemoration of the “United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005 – 2014) and the “United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2010-2020). For that purpose, a multiplicity of information materials were produced appealing to the critical and imaginative spirit in order to create civic instruments capable of raising awareness for an individual and collective responsibility.

The competition was destined to the entire public school network of the municipality of Santana and the participating Reserves, including the “Porto da Cruz” school, associated school to the Santana Biosphere Reserve, Madeira. The projects submitted to competition were presented according to academic levels and categories. 31 projects were presented from a total of 312 students accompanied by 20 teachers.
